History
Washington Monument is a 550 foot stone Obelisk built as a tribute to the military leadership of George Washington during the American Revolution. It was constructed in two phases. The construction started in 1848-1856. It was finally completed during 1876-1884.
It weighs 81,120 tons and stands 555' 5-1/8'' tall. The thickness of its walls at the base is 15' and 18'' at the upper shaft. It is made of white marble blocks which were obtained from Maryland. Some of the marble blocks also came from Massachusetts.
The monument is open to visitors seven days a week. During the summer, tours are conducted from 9 AM to 10 PM. The last tour during summer time starts at 9.30 PM. During the winter the tour hours are changed. The tours start from 9.00 AM and last till 5 PM. The last tour during the winter months starts at 4.30 PM.
July 4 and December 25 are the only two days on which the monument is closed for visitors.
Advisory For Visitors
Since Washington is a very busy metropolitan city, it is best to use public transportation to get to the monument. You can take Metro Bus or Metro rail. You can also use Sky Blue Tours, which comes with the ticket on the tour.
Visitors to the monument are advised not to bring heavy bags. Big purses or bags are not allowed inside the monument. Visitors are advised to arrive at least half an hour early. Since there is a single elevator going up and down, visitors usually have to wait 30 minutes at both ends.
